Features

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) K30, also known as povidone, is a water-soluble polymer with a white to slightly off-white powder appearance. It has a K-value that refers to its mean molecular weight, and it has a molecular formula of (C6H9NO)n. PVP K30 has many properties, including: 

Solubility

PVP K30 is soluble in water and other polar solvents, such as alcohols and Relin, a deep eutectic solvent. 

Adhesive properties

PVP K30 is highly adhesive at low viscosity, with a good balance between adhesive strength and ease of handling. 

Wetting properties

In solution, PVP K30 has excellent wetting properties and readily forms films. 

Hygroscopic nature

PVP K30 is hygroscopic and can absorb up to 40% of its weight in atmospheric water when dry.

Binder

PVP K30 is used as a binder for tablets and capsules, and in agricultural applications such as plant protection, seed treatment, and coating. 

Thickening agent

PVP K30 is used as a thickening agent in teeth whitening gels. 

Dye transfer inhibitor

PVP K30 is added to laundry formulations to limit dye re-deposition onto fabric during the wash cycle. 

Film former

PVP K30 is used as a film former in hair styling products, and can also stabilize foams, emulsions, dispersions, and suspensions. It can be found in hair care products such as sprays, mousses, gels, styling lotions/creams, colorants, and novelty stylers.
