Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a strong, anionic surfactant that is considered milder than sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) but has very similar properties. Sulfates are stable in bases at a higher pH, with good foaming properties.

SLS is used in household cleaning products, engine degreasers, and industrial strength detergents to remove oily stains and residues. It's also found in floor cleaners and car wash products. 

Personal care products

SLS is used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and toothpastes as a fat emulsifier, wetting agent, and detergent. It's also found in lower concentrations in shampoos, shaving foams, facial cleaners, bubble baths, and hand soaps. 

Food

SLS is used as an emulsifier or thickener in fruit juices, punches, marshmallows, and dried egg products. It helps acids mix better with liquids. 

Research

SLS is used as a research tool in protein biochemistry and to study the formation and repair of cataracts in laboratory settings. 

SLS is known to irritate the skin, but experts say that SLS that gets through the skin is quickly broken down and turned into waste matter.
